GENERAL ADULT AND GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY

Dr. Tierney has a lifetime certification in General Adult Psychiatry. Geriatric Psychiatry is an official subspeciality in Psychiatry with a defined curriculum of study and core competencies. Dr. Tierney was among the first Psychiatrists certified in Geriatric Psychiatry when the specialty was first created in 1996. And he has met the requirements to re-certify in the speciality every 10 years since.

TELEMEDICINE

Dr. Tierney is currently offering patient consultation and all other services through telecommunication technology. Telemedicine allows patients unprecedented flexibility and specifically tailored treatment opportunities. Dr. Tierney is pioneering the use of telemedicine in psychiatry.

NEUROPSYCHIATRY

A prominent focus of Neuropsychiatry is the assessment and treatment of the cognitive, behavioral, and mood symptoms of patients with neurological disorders. Neuropsychiatrists are devoted to the care of patients whose symptoms lie in the “gray zone” between the specialities of Neurology and Psychiatry. (Hales and Yudofsky, 2002)

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Dr. Tierney is best know for his work in Psychopharmacology and Medical Psychiatry; however, he is a rare Psychiatrist with Bachelor of Science and Masters Degrees in Psychology. In addition to extensive academic training in Psychotherapy he had 5 years of supervised Psychotherapy training during Residency and Fellowship. The extensive supervision exceeds the training of most Master’s level and even PhD Psychotherapists.

PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY

“Psychopharmacology is the study of the use of medications in treating mental disorders. The complexity of this field requires continuous study in order to keep current with new advances. Psychopharmacologists need to understand all the clinically relevant principles of pharmacokinetics (what the body does to medication) and pharmacodynamics (what the medications do to the body). This includes an understanding of: Protein Binding, Medication half-life, Polymorphic genes, and Drug-to-drug interactions.” (American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology). Dr. Tierney earned the Master Clinician Award from the Neuroscience Education Institute for his excellence in Psychopharmacology and spent many years lecturing Nationally and even Internationally on Clinical Psychopharmacology.

FORENSIC CONSULTATION

Periodically, Dr. Tierney performs Forensic Consultations. The Consultations typically involve issues of Cognitive Capacity and Standard of Care.
